Berlin – The Heart of History
On Museum Island, learn about Berlin’s place in history from the classical era through to the modern. Or admire fascinating Mesopotamian artefacts, a testament to Berlin’s heritage as a centre for archaeological excellence. Perhaps take a closer look at German’s recent divided history at the DDR Museum. At this popular interactive museum, visitors can catch a glimpse of everyday life in East Berlin. Explore Germany’s darkest hour at the Nazi-era Olympic Stadium or its brightest at the East Side Gallery, a mural-clad memorial to German Reunification.
Art and Architecture
Fans of design can enjoy the diverse style here, strongly shaped by its history. The Reichstag parliamentary building blends imperial and modern architecture beautifully, while the TV Tower typifies the brutalist Soviet design ethic. Discover classical art on Museum Island or explore the city’s alternative scene with an engaging graffiti walking tour and workshop.
With so much to do in Berlin itself, it is easy to forget that other great destinations lie just beyond the city boundaries. The nearby capital of Brandenburg State, Potsdam, can make a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of the big city. With a beautiful cathedral and the vast park at Sanssouci, the palace of Frederick the Great, Potsdam is a great place to explore.

East Side Gallery
Not to be missed, this is one of the few remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall which divided East from West Berlin during the Cold War. After reunification, the ‘East Side Gallery’, as it became known, was decorated with murals by over a hundred German and international artists, marking the beginning of a new era of peace in Germany. Stroll along the wall, easily accessible by local transport and with beautiful views along the River Spree towards the Berlin TV Tower.
Museuminsel
Museuminsel, or ‘Museum Island’, is packed with art and history spanning from the classical era to the modern. The city’s rich and diverse 20th Century history is well-represented in the German History Museum and DDR Museum, the latter featuring countless exhibits of East German life, while Berlin’s archaeological pedigree can be seen in the Pergamon Museum, full artefacts from Mesopotamia. You can easily spend a day – if not a week! – exploring the many fascinating museums and exhibits on Museum Island, right in the centre of the city.
Graffiti Tour and Workshop
Known also for its alternative culture, one of the most memorable ways to discover Berlin is with a guided tour of the city’s graffiti scene. Learn about graffiti culture on this great walking tour, and create your own souvenir at the included graffiti workshop.
Berlin's Olympic Stadium
Fans of sport, architecture and history will be fascinated by a visit to the Olympic Stadium. In the outskirts of Berlin, this Romanesque structure was constructed during the Nazi era to host the 1936 Summer Olympics, and today is used for athletic events and is home to Hertha BSC football club. Perhaps enjoy a guided tour of the stadium or a panoramic view over the grounds from the bell tower.
Reichstag
The Reichstagsgebäude, Germany’s parliamentary building, is one of the city’s most iconic structures. Gutted by a fire during Hitler’s chancellorship and left derelict for decades, the building was revived by British architect Sir Norman Foster after reunification, when he added the famous glass dome. Ascend to the roof to walk up the dome and enjoys the views over Berlin, or take a guided tour of the interior to see the circular main chamber, where the German Parliament sits.
